Peter Frohmader – Orakel/Tiefe

23 February, 2010

Cassette, Auricle, 1983

Deep, dark work for synths and, well, as is usual with Mr Frohmader it’s predominantly kettle drums and bass. Nothing wrong with that either. Here are his own notes on the tracks:

Orakel (Oracle) – a visionary flight into other-worldly realms, vividly portrayed on synthesizers, violin and drums.
Tiefe (Depth) – a mysterious sonic painting, beautifully crafted using a wide range of descriptive sound colours.

Ravi Shankar & Daniel Hamrol – The Encounter

23 February, 2010

LP/cassette, CBS India, 1989

In 1989, it was “French year” in India, so as part of the cultural exchange between those two great nations, they staged a massive sound & light extravangaza in Bombay, entitled The Encounter. Music for this was another collision of cultural references, namely this extraordinary pile-up between cut-price Jean Michel-Jarre synth and Fairlight workouts and Ravi Shankar’s orchestra, including some very noticable sitar on part two. There’s a whole load of nonsense on the tape inlay about a creature born of fire, a child of Mother Earth who must something or other to save the world yadda yadda, but it’s drivel with as much rigour as the Disneyland resort 12-minute version of The Lion King.

Bit late for New Age’s prime time, but spot on for all you new hippy kids turned on by Emeralds, Oneohtrix and Dophins from the Future. Or perhaps we’re slowly turning into The Growing Bin or even Crystal Vibrations :-)

A. The Encounter part 1 (35:10)
B. The Encounter part 2 (34:55)

Sad World vols. I – III

4 February, 2010

Been a little while since we had some Fax, so here are all three volumes of the Sad World project. Lovely expansive ambient workouts with an exotic, Asia Minor tinge, they are the work of Amir Abadi and Ramin Naghachian, aka Dr Atmo and Ramin. The former also contributed to Fax acts across the swathe of techno, trance and ambient, under the names Silence, Music to Film, Gamma, Whole Traffic, etc, and produced some great ethno-trance for Eye-Q as Java. His buddy Ramin has done plenty too, but gets the Friendsound cheer just for releasing a trance pounder called “Brainticket” back in the day.

Released in a single edition of 1000 copies each; the first two discs were also compiled as a double pack for Fax and Instinct in 1995.
