• Paul Schütze – Deus ex Machina

10 September, 2008

CD, Extreme, 1989

First release from the Australian multi-instrumentalist who has been the most successful at picking up the gauntlet laid down by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno for so-called Fourth World music. His intricate layered collages of ethnic percussion, electronic treatments and all manner of found sounds have allowed his music to create some very exotic sound-pictures over the years, and he’s collaborated with many of the usual suspects (sit down, Laswell, B.). This comes as one lengthy track, and was originally the soundtrack to a multimedia art exhibit that sounds the height of pretension – fortunately the soundtrack has remained far more successful a piece of art.

NB, if you fancy more, there’s another rare Paul Schütze disc right now over at The Wheel of the Year.
